Welcome to the neighborhood!

Backyard HummingbirdsUniversity City grew bigger by at least two hummingbirds last month. This nest is in our neighbor’s palm tree between our houses.

It’s quite a structural achievement; note the leafy strand under the nest that supports it. For two weeks, we watched these chicks grow from peanut size to what you see in the photo.

Our main fear was that they would fall out as they outgrew the nest. We never saw the mother. We loved watching the wind rock the nest as a natural cradle.

A day after we took this photo, both hummingbirds took off and never returned.
