University City High School students not only started the new school year in new classes, but amid newly completed facilities upgrades. Like many of the district’s high schools, there are major changes occurring inside and outside of the classrooms. The student and staff parking lot facilities at UC High were completely renovated, and solar carport systems were constructed in the parking lot. Safety upgrades included driveway improvements, new bus drop-offs, and a new pedestrian ramp. Lighting, irrigation and landscaping were upgraded as well.
The school also received new athletic facilities including three storage buildings, three restroom/concessions/ticket booth buildings, one monument tower, a new baseball field and softball field with bullpens, batting cages, dugouts, and scoreboards, as well as a new synthetic field with a cooling system, new track and field throwing facilities, new field hockey and soccer fields, a new parking lot for the upper fields, new entry walkway to stadium, accessibility upgrades at the stadium, and reconfiguration of the existing outdoor tennis and basketball courts. Many of the facilities are already completed. The rest will be finished this winter.
A College, Career & Technical Education (CCTE) facility focusing on engineering will be completed this winter as well. This project includes the modernization of the existing woodshop and adjacent classroom to become a state-of-the-art CCTE fabrication and design facility with an emphasis on engineering. Later this year, the high school will begin getting air conditioning and more campus-wide improvements during its whole site modernization project.
In 2011 and 2012, new stadium lighting, an electronic new scoreboard and new public address speakers were installed in the stadium. The existing dirt track and grass field was replaced with a synthetic turf field and all-weather track. Grading, drainage and irrigation system improvements were also done.
These upgrades were funded by Propositions S and Z, San Diego Unified School District’s capital improvement bond programs passed by voters in 2008 and 2012 respectively.
