Happy October from UCCA President Barry Bernstein

Fall season in Southern California may not have the vivid changes in color of roadside foliage as other areas in our country, but still the cooler evenings and the wearing of sweaters and sweatshirts does bring out some seasonal emotions in many of us.

Of course, this Fall we are “sans” Chargers, (Go Aztecs!), and the 2017 major league baseball season playoffs do not include our young and improving Padres. The Miramar Airshow, this year honoring our Vietnam vets, was held in late September…and our schools have had their “Welcome Back to School” events.

The new Nordstrom is scheduled to open in just a couple of weeks, with city buses parking in the special bus areas under the new UTC parking bldg. Other new retailers at UTC will be opening their doors in November. Then there was the surprise announcement from Amazon that they are planning to occupy some available space along Campus Drive, east of Genesee, to accommodate 500 employees. Hmm! does that mean that much more traffic? University City is very busy place!

Standley Park Recreation Center will be hosting some very important meetings this month. The City’s first public meeting in the search for a new chief of police will be held there on Thursday, October 6 at 6:00pm.

The City Library community outreach program, “Community Conversations” will also be held at Standley Park Rec. on Saturday, October 7 at 12:00noon and 1:00pm.

Standley Park Rec. will be hosting a Halloween Carnival for all our kids on Friday, October 25 at 5:00pm. And don’t forget OKTOBERFEST WILL BE HELD AT STANDLEY PARK ON OCTOBER 21 mark your calendars! I hope you have noticed the new street banners announcing EdUCate!’s Oktoberfest celebration. Support our public schools!

Are you concerned about what appears to be an increasing number of UC homes that do not keep their front yards in reasonably good shape? It has been brought to UCCA’s beautification committee’s attention that this has become a problem. When the drought restrictions were lifted did some homeowners/renters just forget/neglect the appearance of their property. Let’s try to remind/help those residents whose homes do not reflect the respect due their neighbors and that of University City.

Our 2018 membership campaign will start this month. Please look over the membership application on page 12. This year, when you join at a level of your choice, you may also donate additional funds to a particular UCCA/Community event/and or activity (i.e. Tree/Menorah Lighting, Beautification, etc. – see list on the membership application). In November, a special membership envelope will be attached to our newsletter. But don’t wait…JOIN NOW!

Finally, don’t forget “flu” shots and checking out your home heating in your preparation for those chilly nights.

October 11 is our next UCCA meeting…please feel welcome to attend. UCCA will be electing officers for 2018 at our NOVEMBER meeting…if you are interested in being nominated for any our elected officer positions, please contact Mack Langston.

Thank you, and remember University City “is more than just a neighborhood”.
