President’s Message for March

From UCCA President Jemma Samala: This is the weekend we spring forward as we get into daylight savings time mode. I don’t know about you, but I love it! Even though we have the same amount of hours in a day, it just feels like we have so much more time and energy to enjoy the wonderful things life has to offer.

Here at UCCA, we’re also springing forward in getting things done. A few of the board members got together with Councilmember Kent Lee and his District 6 staff and interns early this month to help UC residents dump their junk. While the rain kept some folks away, we were able to help about 50 households get rid of oversized trash. It was a great way to jump into spring cleaning for the neighborhood, and we plan to make it an annual event.

UCCA is also helping clean and spruce up the neighborhood medians. Using a grant from the County of San Diego, UCCA is funding the refurbishment at the Governor/Radcliffe Drive intersection, which will be worked on during the week of March 18. While our grant will only cover the cost to refurbish one of our many University City medians, we welcome sponsors and donations to help cover the rest (hint, hint).

Speaking of cleaning, try to lend a hand to neighborhood volunteer Vince Reardon and his People for a Clean UC group, as they clean up our local streets the 2nd Sunday of the month at 8:30am (meet in front of Starbucks on Governor Drive).

Let’s also try to spring forward in action. The UCCA board members are volunteering their time to get things done for our University City neighborhood. But the spring in our steps sometimes feel slow, as we realize that we can’t do all the work ourselves. We need your help, in both time and membership donations. Volunteers are needed for: Neighborhood Watch Captains, Newsletter Delivery, Membership Outreach, Grant Writing, and the newly formed Legislative Committee. If you haven’t become a paid member of UCCA for 2024, please do so. Send in a check or go to: Join UCCA Today!. Your membership dues and donations help us fund special projects, support neighborhood organizations, and print our monthly University City News newsletter (delivered by an all-volunteer force).

Make sure to come by our General UCCA Meeting on March 13, 5:30pm at the library on Governor Drive to hear about local issues and share your voice. And I’d also love to hear your thoughts about what UCCA can do at my monthly open hours, March 16, 9:00 to 11:00am at the Starbucks on Governor Drive.

UCCA was formed to serve the community. Spring forward and volunteer to help. Enjoy the rest of your month, I’ll be enjoying the extra sunlight in the garden.
