This past spring students from Spreckels Elementary took part in the inaugural “Engineering-4-Kids” STEM enrichment program spearheaded by MIT alums Maroula Bratakos and Mark Wintersmith.
As “Apprentice Engineers” (2nd-5th grade) in the Mechanical Engineering track they were able to design, create, test, and refine a variety of machines and “contraptions”. The students learned fundamental physics concepts, simple mechanics and design concepts — all while having fun!
Projects included roller coasters, egg-drop vehicles, dragsters and other inventions that they got to keep at the end of the course.
The program will be back in the fall. For info contact Mark Wintersmith, wintma@ga.com.
