Making a difference in University City

During the month of May, UCCA thanks and honors some of the many women who make a difference in our community.

When Janis Deady first smelled a putrid odor in her neighborhood, she could have turned up her nose and ignored it. But instead, she looked into the issue and ended up at the Air Pollution Control District (APCD). After Janis rallied neighbors to report odors, the APCD cited the Miramar Landfill for violations. The landfill has now modified some of its procedures to reduce the potential for odors

Michele Hagstrom recently helped to organize the UCHS Grad Nite Garage Sale fundraiser. In addition, she’s a Neighborhood Watch captain, and a Lead on Nextdoor, the social network for neighbors. And if that’s not enough, she also contributes to the 4th of July Celebration by coordinating Cheer Team volunteers who help out every year in the kids area.

Barbara Gellman, Lorraine George, Ruth DeSantis, and Pia Montovani-Sud (who took the lower photo) are all Neighborhood Watch captains who provide neighbors with crime prevention and safety tips. But there’s more. Each also gives back to the community in other ways. Coordinator Barbara is active in her synagogue as well as with UCCA’s transformer art project. Lorraine works as a Reiki therapist and is a UCCA Buy Local participant. Among other projects, Ruth is co-chairing efforts to update Marcy Park. And Pia, not pictured here, is active with both the UCHS PTSA and the 4th of July Celebration.
