Mon, Feb 16: Zone Zero, Defensible Space, and Home Hardening for Fire Safety

Share

Zone Zero is the area closest to a structure’s outer walls, the space from zero to five feet surrounding a home or other structure. The goal of Zone Zero is to create a non-flammable area around the structure that is free of vegetation, debris, and other combustible fuels. This creates a fire break around your home.

The SD Fire-Rescue Department and the Fire Safe Council urge all residents to take personal responsibility to prevent and prepare for fire. The fire department recommends starting in the area closest to your home and working your way out.

  • Create Defensible Space / Zone Zero by clearing brush and flammable materials away from your home.
  • Harden Your Home with vent screens, enclosed eaves, and non-combustible fencing.
  • Assemble Emergency Supplies and belongings in a safe place.
  • Plan Escape Routes and make sure all those residing within the home know the plan of action.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue has partnered with the International Association of Fire Chiefs to create the Ready, Set, Go! Wildland Fire Action Guide for protection life and property. The Action Guide has been updated to include information about Zone Zero. It is available at: https://www.sandiego.gov/fire/community-risk-reduction/wildfire-preparedness
