CNC: College Students have Expanded Access to CalFresh Benefits under New State Eligibility Rules

Share

From County News Center October 19, 2026: More college students across California now qualify for CalFresh after the state recently eased enrollment requirements. The change expands access to the nutrition program for students who may struggle to afford groceries while pursuing their education.

Students enrolled at least half time at a California Community College, California State University, or the University of California, now meet CalFresh enrollment requirements. Previously, students had to satisfy stricter criteria to apply.

This shift marks the second major update to student eligibility. On June 1 new federal rules granted students an exemption from CalFresh work requirements, further widening access.

To support the growing student population, the County partners with San Diego State University, University of California San Diego, Cal State San Marcos, Southwestern College, San Diego City College, Miramar College, MiraCosta College, San Diego College of Continuing Education and San Diego Mesa College. The County places benefits liaisons on campuses or offers appointments to help students navigate enrollment.
