The Ready Set Go Guide provides tips and tools you need to prepare for wildland fire threats, gain situational awareness when a fire starts, and act early as directed by local officials. Your San Diego Fire-Rescue Department encourages everyone to become familiar with the Personal Wildland Fire Action Guide.

The Ready Set Go Guide provides essential information about defensible space including Zone 0, fire-resistant vegetation, and home hardening materials. This guide also includes a checklist of emergency supplies needed as part of your personal wildland fire action plan. Defensible Space is the buffer zone and fire break you should create around a structure to protect it.

Zone 0 is the area within 5 feet of a home or building, including outbuildings, attached decks, and stairs.

Why 5 feet? Keeping the area within 5 feet of a home clear of vegetation and other flammable materials helps prevent wildfire from reaching the structure of the house by creating a 5-foot fire break around your home.

The San Diego Fire-Rescue Department urges all of us to use the Ready Set Go! guidelines to prepare and protect your home and property in case of fire with these five steps:

  1. Create defensible space by clearing brush and flammable materials within 5 feet of your home.
  2. Use fire-resistant landscaping in your yard.
  3. Harden your home with fire-safe vent screens & construction measures.
  4. Assemble emergency supplies and belongings in a safe place.
  5. Plan escape routes and make sure all those residing within the home know what to do.
