As announced by the City on the Affordable Home Development Master Plan page, the newly renovated University Community Library on Governor, a City-owned property, is one of several libraries being considered for redevelopment as affordable housing.
*Please note that the City has not yet developed a draft of the Master Plan. The City is currently gathering community feedback and conducting analysis to inform a future plan.
Twenty City-owned sites were evaluated using criteria such as how each site is used today, the importance of existing community assets, potential disruption to current operations, suitability for shelter or housing, development feasibility, and environmental or safety considerations. These factors helped determine which locations could best support future affordable housing or shelter opportunities.
From the initial list of 20 City-owned sites, 11 were identified as the most promising candidates for further analysis. Any potential development at a candidate site with an existing library would include both a replacement library and housing, consistent with the Library Master Plan.
*Please note that no specific development is being proposed at the University Community Library site or any of the other sites being evaluated at this time. The City is evaluating City-owned properties to better understand where there may be opportunities to continue providing critical City services – including libraries and other community facilities – while also exploring opportunities to add affordable housing. This effort is intended to explore opportunities to add housing to City-owned properties, including library sites, not to replace any existing facilities. No decisions have been made regarding any of the sites being studied.
The City is hosting an Open House on Wednesday, August 12, from 5 to 6:30 pm at Standley Rec Center, to discuss four of these sites: Rose Canyon Operations Yard, University Community Library, Mira Mesa Library, and Clairemont Library.
